Newport Folk Festival L<3ve

My beauties! Hello!

It’s been almost three weeks 😦 I’m sorry for that. I don’t really have an excuse besides work and climbing, so you’re just going to have to love me regardless.

How are things?

I miss France today. Who am I kidding, I miss France everyday… but today I am feeling especially sick for what became my second home (or third, behind Burlington MAYBE). Alas, there’s not much I can do about that currently; c’est la vie. I think I have this undiagnosed (well, I’m diagnosing it now) problem where I have to travel or explore a new place every other week or so or I go a little stir crazy.

Why can’t some rich awesome person just hand me stacks of bills so I can travel the world opening eco-friendly and sustainable juice bars that use local produce? If you know of someone who fits the bill, I’m ready and waiting.

On a more realistic note, t seems like you all enjoyed my last post on The Gunks; thanks for that. I enjoy all of you, too. I promised that I would share about some of my other gypsy endeavors, so here it goes!

July 26th, 2014: THE NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL!!! That’s right, I scored tickets. My amazing friend Sarah, who happens to also be a champion concert go-er such as myself, used some gypsy magic to obtain us last minute tickets to (in my opinion) the best day of the weekend long festival. The best part? We paid LESS than face value! It was awesome.

As you can see, it was a pretty fantastic lineup of performers. My favorites were of course Deer Tick, but Jack White and The Oh Hellos came in close behind.

I just can’t get enough of Jon’s (Deer Tick’s lead singer) voice; it’s downright magical. His very pregnant wife, Vanessa Carlton, must think so too.

I had not been to the Newport Folk Festival in years because of it’s growing popularity and tickets selling out so damn fast, and I’m sad I had been missing out! It really is a magical place, right at Fort Adams on the water. So stunning and all the people there are friendly. However, I tend to be a big mush when it comes to music festivals, so maybe I’m a little bias. Regardless, I will definitely be returning and all of you should, too! My goal is to be a vendor there sometime in the near future — you can probably guess for what.

Sooooo, I had all these grand intentions to share more epic adventures will all of you sweet souls, but Max has just informed me that he needs my assistance with acquiring his car. And since I have been carting his bum around for the past 3+ weeks, I’m pretty eager to oblige. HOWEVER, I promise that I will be better with keeping you all updated on my life. It’s exciting, after all!

Before I leave, here’s a picture of the one purchase I made the the fest. I am in need of belts with all this epic rock climbing I have been doing, and this one was handcrafted, beautiful and inexpensive… so how could I say no?

My Apologies…

Hello, beautiful dearies. I would like to start off saying that I’m sorry I’ve been such a terrible, awful blogger this past year. I had a lot going on, you know… with the whole graduating college and starting my big girl adult life (kind of). As a quick re-cap:

– I graduated with two degrees; one in English and another in European Studies from the University of Vermont in May 2013.

– Before I even graduated, I was hired by a local RI business called “The Newport Dinner Train” to head and basically manage an entire new subsidiary of the company, called “The Ice Cream Train”. Let me just tell you… I KILLED IT. Ask me for more details if you are interested, and you should totally google it or something, we got press like it was nobody’s business. However, it was seasonal and only ran from June until September, but we’ve got a strong second season in our sites.

– While managing the Ice Cream Train, my boss was so pleased that he made me the Social Media and Marketing Manager for the entire company, and I received yet another promotion in September to be “The Polar Express” Manager, another subsidiary of the business, which ran in November and December. I had a grand time learning the ropes and managing a small company, and I am so grateful for the opportunities that were given to me. I worked a crap ton and definitely had chunks of extreme exhaustion, but I’m young so this is the time to do it!

– Since the train is a seasonal business, I had to find something from January – March to fill my time and my pockets (darn student loans), so at the end of August while I was scouring the depths of Craigslist, I found an ad and was hired to be a Mixologist at a local juice bar in my home town called “Raw Bobs”. Let me tell you, balancing both jobs and working 55+ hours a week wasn’t my idea of a blast, but I LOVE the juice bar. Seriously, I’m obsessed. So much so that I have now made it my goal and dream to open up my own someday, but more on that to come. Raw Bobs is a very new business (we opened in May), so it’s been an immense pleasure being able to be a large part (I’m one of 5 employees, owner included) of a company that has huge plans and aspirations to help people “eat real and be well”. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but my boss really likes me – she’s an amazing woman –  and I am basically the organizer of the whole shop *yeah mild OCD skills*! We’ll see where this takes me!

– Anyway, now I’m getting into a winter groove; because there is no train and the juice bar isn’t hopping too much in the winter (though we are getting busier by the day thanks to being featured on the cover of RI Local for the January issue), I’ve got time on my hands that I haven’t had since my last semester of college – oh the good ole days where I only had one class….

– So what to do with this thing called free time?! First, I want to get back into blogging. I also want to start changing what I write about a teensy bit, mostly because I want to start a blog for Raw Bobs sometime soon, so I need to start incorporating healthy living sturffff into my posts, so stay tuned for those. Up until two weeks ago, I wasn’t so bored because Max was on break, but now that he has classes again I have to entertain myself, and you guys too… duh.

– Once I moved back home in May I started becoming a regular at Gold’s Gym (5 or 6 days a week, bitches)… I’m getting buff! Well, maybe not buff because I don’t particularly want to look like a man, but I’m getting to be pretty toned and there’s a solid four pack in my abdominal region, and hopefully it’ll be a six-er soon, but I won’t show off until then! Max lifts weights so he’s helped me get some good exercises in (I’ll share those too in the future), and I’m a quick study so it’s really paying off. I feel good, really good. All of you out there should definitely get on this band wagon, it’s so worth it. I can now leg press 230lbs for 10 consistent reps 😀 Not bad for a chick that weighs 130!

– Another hobby that Max and I have picked up as of 3 weeks ago is Rock Climbing. IT’S SO FUN OMG. We go to this place called “The Rock Spot” a few towns over, and I just recently bought a membership there. Obviously, I’m no Dan Osman by any means, but it’s a fantastic workout and just a freaking bundle of fun. Get at me if you have any questions or are interested, I’ll show you the ropes (pun intended). I’ll start posting videos and tips on this hobby too once I get a little more experienced. If any of you have any pointers, I’m all ears!

– Well, that’s pretty much what I’ve been up to this past year. School/Work – Graduation – WorkWorkWork – Here I Am Now. I haven’t been traveling as much as my little heart desires because of the fact that I was working more than full-time – gotta make that dough, doe –  but I was able to make it to a day of Camp Bisco over the summer, and I spent a few days (6) in NYC with Max visiting my beautiful amazing friend Aly (she lives in Brooklyn) to go to the Disco Biscuits New Years Eve NYC Run!!! Max and I went to three shows, the 28th, 29th and 31st, and they absolutely KILLED it. I have to steal the videos from Max because my phone camera is awful, but once I do I will share the love with all of you awesome peeps. Aly’s birthday was the 30th so we partied for that, and other than that we just enjoyed the city and the company of friends. It was a nice hiatus after killing myself working The Polar Express.

– Other than NYC, I just came back on Tuesday night from visiting yet another beautiful amazing friend, Sarah, in Syracuse, NY for a quick 4 days. We basically were lamps since Syracuse is an arctic tundra, but we went to this awesome place called Tinker Falls and I put my climbing skills to good use by climbing up the ice and snow to get under the frozen waterfall. IT WAS AWESOME. Check out the pics below, courtesy of Sarah.

So there you have it! That’s my life in a quick nutshell. I promise I’ll be way way better at blogging in days/weeks/months to come, so stay tuned, I’m planning on doing big things and you guys can come along and follow me on the journey. 😉 Keep being awesome!

Don’t Go Killing That Vibe

Don’t go killin’, killin’ the vibe
I can’t take your lame style
Can’t you just sit a while
And try your hardest to smile?

Hi babies. This song is awesome, and I’m kind of obsessed (thanks Sarah), so you should probably check it out — it’s called “Killin’ The Vibe” by Ducktails.

My biff is cooler than yours

Anyway, hope y’all are doing well! I’ve been going h.a.m. at the gym lately; Max has me lifting weights so naturally my body is sore practically all over, but in a really good feeling way. I can’t boast too much, but for being a lankier, 130lb girl, I’m making progress. Usually I will just bench lift the bar, which is 45lbs, and I don’t go much over 40lbs for anything else. Gotta start somewhere! Soon I’ll be getting nice and strong. Womp.

Cute Weiney Dog

I can’t believe it’s already January 5th, noo! That means I have to end my break in like a week. Granted, I don’t have a very heavy course load next semester… but I feel like my stay in Rhode Island has been too short. I’ve also been taking an on-line 1 credit course since Christmas, which also eats up some of my time. The class is pretty interesting though, and I’ll definitely dedicate a post to all the useful stuff I have learned from it.

Let’s see… what have I been doing in the last few days? Yesterday was pretty jam packed — I had spent the previous night as Max’s house in Narragansett, so I had to wake up early, get my homework and reading done for the day (blah), and then head back home so I could clean the barn before my day plans were set in motion.

After doing all the horsey stuff, I went and picked Sarah and Katie up and we went to Newport!  I love Newport; it’s so beautiful and the houses there are huge and gorgeous, definitely visit it if any of you are ever in Rhode Island. Ocean Drive is not something to miss. We spent a few hours there — long enough to drive around, explore for a while on the Cliff Walk and see the sunset over the ocean. Not bad, huh?

After my afternoon in Newport, I went home for like 20 minutes then was out the door again with my Mom, Kiley, Brenna and Logan to head to my Grandparents house for a surprise dinner; they’re leaving to spend the next few months in Florida, so we met up with my Aunt, Uncle and Cousins and just hung out and ate some good food and drank some tasty wine. We stayed there for a few hours, then once we got back to my house I was out the door once more to go to Mollie’s house to spend the night with her and Molly. Beer was drank, we went nekkid in the hot tube, and good times were had.

Love is LifeOf course since it is break, I’ve been eating some good food lately. I haven’t been cooking as much as I would like – people in my life take up that time – but my mom is still a fabulous cook, and I’ve been gorging. For example:
Steak & Couscous stuffed PepperThat was pretty dank, if I do say so myself. Sarah and I also made these awesome cookies (along with mulled wine) the other day, I’ll post the recipe below in case you feel like re-creating it. Way worth your while, trust me.

Monster Cookies

Monster Cookies

2 extra large eggs
1 1/4 cups light brown sugar
1 cup sugar
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/4 cup nutella
1/2 tsp instant espresso coffee granules
3/4 cup flour
2 tsp baking soda
1 stick butter, softened
3/4 cup M&M’s
3/4 cup chocolate chip morsels
1/2 cup pecans, chopped
3 1/2 cups oatmeal

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a mixing bowl whisk the eggs and sugars until creamy about 3 minutes. Add the salt, vanilla extract, nutella, instant espresso, flour, baking soda and butter. Using a spoon stir the ingredients until it is well mixed.

Stir in the m&m’s, chocolate chip morsels, pecans and oatmeal.

Using a cookie scoop or spoon drop tablespoon size drops onto a silicone mat or cookie sheet.

Bake for 8 minutes and then remove to let cool for 2 minutes on pan. Then remove with spatula to wire rack to finishing cooling.

*Cookies will be thinner than normal just be sure to not over bake.*

They sound pretty good, right? RIGHT. Being 21 and wine lovers (I mean, I did just get back from France), we made mulled wine with these spices my mom recently bought.

Mulled Wine

Also, I have a new goal in mind, folks: I want to start a wine and beer journal. Since I can now legally drink, I want to take advantage of all the microbreweries Vermont has to offer, and I just want to experiment with different kinds of spirits. I think I’m going to make it a new tab on this blog, so stay tuned for that. I don’t really have any idea how to start one of these journals, but I’ll do some research and get back to you.

Well, I think that’s all for now my friends. I’m hungry… so I’m going to go raid my cupboards and cook up something delectable. Until next time!
