Do-It-Yourself: Almond Milk (Rounds 3&4)


Hello! Sorry I haven’t been on my blogging grind lately… but that’s what happens during vacation! I’ll work on formulating a post so you know how my trip was, but until then…

I hope you are all doing smashingly 🙂 As promised, I’m just going to give you a quick Almond Milk update. I just combined rounds 3 and 4 because well, it seemed like a grand idea.

This was my third attempt (below picture) and I think it came out pretty good! If I’m being honest, I don’t really drink this plain, but it’s been pretty damn good in my smoothies. I have of course given it tastes from the jar, and it’s got a nice touch of sweetness to it for being so simple.

So, what did I use this time? 2 cups almonds, 4 cups water, and 2 1/2 teaspoons local honey. That’s it! Then just follow the directions per usual (reference here). Of course I also saved the pulp to utilize in the future – which I highly recommend.

It’s mainly my mom and I that use the almond milk – I use it in smoothies and she puts it in her cereal – so I usually ask her opinion of them. So far the rankings are 2,3,1 and I would probably agree. The fourth round I kicked it up a little bit; I forgot to take a picture of the ingredients, but here’s the final product:

Take note of the black flecks in the first picture, which leads me to sharing the ingredients for round 4:
2 cups almonds, 4 cups water, 4 large Medjool dates, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 2 pinches of fine grain sea salt aaaand the culprit for the black: 1 whole vanilla bean! Since I had a few leftover from my vanilla extract project, I figured I would slice one open and add it to the mix. I added the dates and vanilla before milking, and the rest afterwards. Hope you enjoy!

Like I said, I wanted to make this one short and sweet. On a quick side note, though, we have a fancy-pants Weight Watchers scale at my house, and my parents were playing around with it and apparently it gives you your body fat percentage. I tried it out and mine is 21.2%, which falls under the “fitness” category; 20% is the “athlete” category and that is officially what I am aiming for. Wish me luck!!
